You've decided to move to Spain.

The furniture is being sorted. The paperwork has begun. You've started wondering whether you really need everything in the loft.

And then you look at the car.

Does that come too?

Possibly.

But bringing a UK-registered vehicle permanently to Spain isn't simply a case of driving it down, parking outside your new home and carrying on indefinitely.

If Spain is becoming your permanent home, you need to understand what happens to the car too.

Can I bring my UK car to Spain?

Yes, a British vehicle can be brought to Spain.

The more useful question is:

Is it worth bringing it?

That depends on the vehicle, its age and value, how attached you are to it, its technical specification, the costs involved and how practical a right-hand-drive car will be for your life here.

For some vehicles, importing and registering them in Spain makes perfect sense.

For others, selling in Britain and buying a Spanish-registered car after you arrive may be considerably easier.

Work that out before automatically adding the car to the move.

Can I just keep driving my UK-registered car?

If you're visiting Spain temporarily in a UK-registered vehicle, that's one situation.

If you've become resident in Spain and the vehicle is staying here permanently, that's another.

Spanish rules apply to the registration and use of vehicles by residents, and there are procedures and deadlines that may apply when importing a vehicle permanently.

Don't rely on the fact that you've seen British-plated cars driving around Spain for years.

That tells you there are British-plated cars in Spain.

It doesn't tell you whether your arrangements are compliant. 😂

What is involved in registering a UK car in Spain?

The exact process and costs depend on the vehicle and your circumstances, but permanent importation can involve several stages.

These may include:

• Import/customs formalities
• Vehicle documentation
• Technical inspection
• Spanish registration requirements
• Taxes or fees where applicable
• Spanish number plates
• Insurance
• Administrative paperwork

If you're importing as part of a genuine transfer of residence, your circumstances may also affect how certain taxes or reliefs apply.

What about the ITV?

Spain's roadworthiness inspection is the ITV - Inspección Técnica de Vehículos.

An imported vehicle may need to satisfy Spanish technical requirements as part of the registration process.

A UK MOT and a Spanish ITV aren't interchangeable simply because both involve somebody examining the car and eventually handing you paperwork.

Depending upon the vehicle, technical modifications or additional documentation may be necessary before Spanish registration can be completed.

Find out what's required for your particular car before bringing it permanently.

Does being right-hand drive matter?

Legally possible and practically enjoyable are two different questions.

You can use a right-hand-drive vehicle in Spain, but think about how you'll actually drive it.

Overtaking visibility can be different.

Car-park ticket machines suddenly appear on the wrong side of the vehicle.

Toll booths can become entertaining if you're alone.

And if most of your driving will be around Spanish towns, villages and mountain roads, you may eventually decide that sitting on the left-hand side of the car would make life easier.

Then again, you may love your car and consider all of that a minor inconvenience.

It's personal.

Will I need to change the headlights?

Possibly, depending on the vehicle.

A car manufactured for the UK market may have lighting or other technical specifications that differ from Spanish requirements.

This is one of the things to investigate before deciding whether importing the vehicle is financially worthwhile.

Modern cars vary enormously, so don't assume the experience of someone importing a completely different model applies to yours.

What about insurance?

Make sure your insurance actually covers how and where the vehicle is being used.

A UK insurance arrangement designed for temporary European trips isn't necessarily appropriate for a vehicle permanently based in Spain.

Once a vehicle is registered in Spain, you'll need appropriate Spanish insurance.

Again, timing matters.

Can I drive in Spain with my UK driving licence?

That's why the sensible approach is to obtain an estimate for your actual vehicle.

Then compare:

versus

Likely sale value in Britain + cost of buying an equivalent Spanish car

Suddenly the decision becomes much easier.

What if I'm moving to a rural property?

This is where the car itself becomes part of the property conversation.

If you're buying a finca at the end of an unmade camino, the low sports car you adore may not adore its new life quite as much.

If you're living in the centre of Dénia, an enormous vehicle may become considerably less charming when you're trying to park it.

If you choose a mountain property, you'll be driving mountain roads.

If you live somewhere walkable, you may discover you barely use a car at all.

Should I buy a car in Spain instead?

For plenty of people, yes.

Selling the UK vehicle before moving and purchasing a Spanish-registered car removes the import process entirely.

You also start with a left-hand-drive vehicle already intended for the Spanish market.

But that doesn't automatically make it the right decision.

Perhaps your UK car is relatively new.

Maybe replacing it would cost considerably more.

Perhaps it's unusual or valuable.

Or maybe you simply love the bloody thing. 😂

Do the sums rather than assuming one option is always better.

Don't make the decision too late

If you're seriously considering bringing your vehicle, investigate the process while you're planning the rest of the relocation.

Find out:

• Whether your particular vehicle is straightforward to register
• What technical changes might be required
• What documentation you'll need
• What taxes or fees may apply
• Whether any transfer-of-residence relief may be relevant
• What the likely professional costs are
• How insurance will work
• What you'll need to do about your driving licence

Then decide.

That's considerably better than arriving in Spain first and beginning with:

"Right. What do I do with the car?"
