Do I need a visa to move to Spain from the UK?

If you're a British citizen planning to make Spain your permanent home, this is one of the first questions you'll need to answer.

And unfortunately, there isn't one answer that applies to everybody.

Since Brexit, UK citizens no longer have the automatic right to move to Spain and live or work here indefinitely.

But that certainly doesn't mean you can't move here.

It means you need to establish which route applies to you before you make the move.

Your circumstances matter.

Are you retiring?

Will you continue working?

Are you self-employed?

Can you work remotely?

Are you moving to join family?

Do you intend to live in Spain permanently or simply spend part of each year here?

Those answers can lead to very different requirements.

Residency and buying property are not the same thing

This catches people out.

Buying a home in Spain does not automatically give a British citizen Spanish residency.

And you don't necessarily need to become resident simply because you own a Spanish property.

You might buy a holiday home on the Costa Blanca and continue living primarily in Britain.

Or you might buy exactly the same property with the intention of making Spain your permanent home.

Same house.

Completely different circumstances.

That's why we want to know what you're actually planning to do with the property rather than simply what you'd like to buy.

What visa options are available?

There are different routes through which non-EU citizens may be able to live in Spain.

The appropriate route depends on your circumstances and may involve factors such as whether you intend to work, your income, savings, employment situation, family circumstances and healthcare arrangements.

You may hear terms such as:

Non-Lucrative Visa

Often discussed by people intending to live in Spain without working here.

Digital Nomad Visa

Potentially relevant to some people working remotely for businesses or clients outside Spain.

Work or self-employment routes

For people whose move involves employment or running a business in Spain.

Family-related residency routes

Where particular family relationships or circumstances create a route to residency.

But knowing that a visa exists is not the same as knowing that you qualify for it.

And requirements can change.

So please don't choose your visa because somebody in a Facebook group announced that theirs was easy. 😂

What happened to the Golden Visa?

You may still find older articles online telling overseas property buyers that purchasing Spanish real estate above a particular value can provide access to Spain's Golden Visa.

That information is now outdated.

Spain ended its investor Golden Visa programme in 2025.

This is a good example of why relocation information needs to be checked against current rules, rather than relying on an article that happens to rank highly on Google.

What about the 90-day rule?

If you're a British citizen who isn't resident in Spain, the amount of time you can spend within the Schengen Area is restricted.

You'll often hear this described as the 90 days in any 180-day period rule.

It matters particularly to British owners who want to spend extended periods at their Spanish property while remaining UK residents.

And remember: the calculation relates to time spent across the Schengen Area, not simply Spain.

If you're planning to divide your year between Britain and a Costa Blanca home, understand the rules properly rather than assuming that owning a property changes them.

It doesn't.

Can I retire to Spain from the UK?

British citizens can still retire to Spain, but retirement itself doesn't automatically create a right of residence.

You'll need an appropriate route and will generally need to demonstrate that you satisfy the requirements applying to it.

Your finances, healthcare arrangements and other circumstances may all be relevant.

This is exactly the point at which proper professional advice becomes worthwhile.

The dream might be retirement in the sunshine.

The application, unfortunately, is still paperwork. 😂

Can I work remotely from Spain?

Potentially, yes - but don't assume that being paid by a British company means Spanish rules don't apply to you.

If you're physically living and working in Spain, immigration, tax, social security and employment considerations can arise.

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa has created an option for some remote workers, but it has specific eligibility requirements.

If your laptop is coming with you, establish how you're going to live and work legally in Spain before choosing the terrace you're planning to work from.

Good Wi-Fi comes later. 😂

What about healthcare?

Your healthcare arrangements may form part of your residency or visa planning.

Depending upon your circumstances, you may have access to Spain's public healthcare system through a particular route, or you may need private medical insurance.

British pensioners may also encounter the S1 system, depending on eligibility.

Healthcare requirements can be particularly important when applying for certain visas, so this isn't something we'd leave until after you've moved.

Establish what applies to you early.

Do I need an NIE?

If you're buying property in Spain, the NIE - Número de Identidad de Extranjero - will become a very familiar collection of letters.

It is an identification number for foreigners and is required for many financial, legal and administrative transactions in Spain.

Your lawyer or adviser can normally help you arrange one as part of the buying process.

An NIE is important.

But an NIE isn't the same thing as residency.

That's another distinction worth understanding from the beginning.

What documents might I need?

Exactly what you'll need depends upon the route you're using.

Applications can involve documents relating to areas such as:

• Identity
• Financial means
• Healthcare or medical insurance
• Criminal records
• Employment or professional activity
• Family relationships
• Accommodation
• Official translations
• Legalisation or apostilles

Some documents may need to be obtained in the UK before you leave.

And some have validity periods.

This is why starting the process early - and in the correct order - can save an enormous amount of frustration.

When should I start the residency process?

Before the removal van is sitting outside your new house would be a good start. 😂

Seriously, though, early.

If your ability to live permanently in Spain depends upon obtaining a particular visa, establish your route and likely timetable before making irreversible relocation decisions.

Buying the property and gaining the legal right to live here are separate processes.

They need to work together.

Who should give me immigration advice?

This is important.

That's the enjoyable part.

Residency determines whether and how you can make the move.

The property determines what that new life might actually look like.
