Moving Your Belongings from the UK to Spain

You've decided to move to Spain.

Excellent.

Now you just need to work out how thirty years of accumulated possessions are going to get there with you. 😂

For some people, moving from the UK to Spain means a couple of suitcases and the dog.

For others, it means sofas, beds, boxes, artwork, bicycles, tools, family treasures and a dining table that apparently absolutely must cross Europe despite nobody having eaten at it since 2019.

International removals aren't the glamorous part of relocating to the Costa Blanca.

But getting them right can make your first few weeks in Spain considerably easier.

Should I bring all my furniture to Spain?

Before asking how to move everything, ask whether you actually want to.

Your life in Spain may look quite different from your life in Britain.

You may spend much more time outside.

Rooms may be different sizes.

The enormous sofa that fitted beautifully in your UK living room may look completely ridiculous in a traditional Spanish townhouse.

And houses here don't necessarily need the same things your British house did.

So before paying to transport every possession you own across Europe, be ruthless.

Keep. Sell. Donate. Bin. Spain.

Moving country is a wonderful excuse to finally deal with the cupboard you've been refusing to open for eleven years.

Get removal quotations early

Don't wait until you've completed on your Spanish property before discovering that every reputable removal company is booked for the next month.

Speak to several companies early in the process.

Ideally, look for firms with genuine experience of UK-to-Spain removals after Brexit rather than simply general domestic removals.

Ask exactly what their quotation includes.

Packing?

Collection?

Storage?

Customs paperwork?

Delivery into individual rooms?

Insurance?

Unpacking?

Removal of packing materials afterwards?

The cheapest headline price isn't necessarily the cheapest move if half the service you need is charged separately.

Brexit changed moving your possessions too

Moving household belongings between the UK and Spain now involves customs formalities that weren't part of the process in quite the same way before Brexit.

Exactly what documentation and reliefs may apply will depend on your circumstances and the nature and timing of your move.

A professional international removal company accustomed to UK-Spain relocations should be able to explain what documentation they need from you and how their customs process works.

This is one of those occasions when experience matters.

You really don't want to discover that an essential document is missing while your sofa is sitting somewhere between Surrey and Alicante.

Make an inventory

Yes, it's boring.

Do it anyway.

Create a proper inventory of what you're moving.

It helps with the removal company, insurance, customs documentation and - perhaps most importantly - remembering what on earth is inside Box 37.

Photograph valuable or particularly important items before they're packed.

And label boxes properly.

Kitchen is useful.

Kitchen - kettle, mugs, coffee, corkscrew is considerably more useful when you've just arrived after a twelve-hour day and are surrounded by 64 identical cardboard boxes.

Priorities. 😂

Think about what you'll need immediately

Your removal truck and you may not arrive at the Spanish house at exactly the same time.

So don't pack everything you need for the first few days into the lorry.

Keep essentials with you.

Documents.

Medication.

Chargers.

Basic toiletries.

A few clothes.

Anything the children absolutely cannot live without.

Pet essentials.

And whatever you'll need to make your first coffee the following morning.

Treat the first few days almost as though you're going on holiday in a completely unfurnished property.

If the removal truck arrives early, wonderful.

If it doesn't, you're still functioning.

What about electrical appliances?

Think before automatically bringing every electrical appliance from Britain.

Spain and the UK use different plug types, even though household electricity supply is broadly compatible for many appliances.

Adapters are one solution, but living permanently with adapters attached to every lamp and appliance can become irritating.

And then there's the practical question:

Is it worth paying to transport it?

That old microwave may have served you faithfully for fifteen years.

It may also cost more to move than replace.

Large appliances should be considered particularly carefully if your Spanish property already has them or if the kitchen layout is different.

Will my UK furniture fit my Spanish property?

Measure.

Then measure again.

Traditional Spanish properties in particular can have layouts, staircases and doorways that bear absolutely no relationship to the enormous piece of furniture you're determined to bring.

If you've already bought your Spanish property, take measurements before the removal company collects everything.

Doorways.

Stairs.

Room dimensions.

Lift dimensions if you're buying an apartment.

Access from the street.

A removal truck arriving with your gigantic British wardrobe doesn't magically make the Spanish staircase wider.

What if my Spanish property isn't ready yet?

Storage can be extremely useful.

You may have sold your UK property before completing in Spain.

Perhaps you're renting temporarily while searching.

Or you've bought something that needs renovation before your belongings arrive.

Ask removal companies about storage options at both ends of the journey.

It can be much easier to store your possessions for a few weeks than to force the timing of your property sale, Spanish purchase and international move to line up perfectly.

Because they probably won't.

Moving with children

Children have an impressive ability to consider the one thing you've packed at the very bottom of the removal truck absolutely essential to their survival.

Let them choose a bag or box of things that travels with you.

Favourite toys.

Electronics.

Comfort items.

Something familiar for their first night.

Moving country is exciting, but it's also a huge change.

Having their own things around them quickly can make the new house feel like their home, rather than simply the strange place Mum and Dad have suddenly decided everyone is living in.

Moving with pets

Pets need their own relocation planning too.

Travel arrangements, identification, vaccinations and entry requirements should be checked well before your moving date.

And think beyond the journey.

Where will the dog be while the removal team has the front door open for six hours?

Where's the cat going when strangers start carrying sofas through its new territory?

A quiet room, secure garden area or temporary alternative arrangement can make moving day considerably less stressful for everybody involved.

Especially the cat.

The cat will already be judging your decision to move countries. 😂

Don't send important paperwork on the removal truck

This deserves its own section.

Keep important documents with you.

Passports.

Property paperwork.

Residency or visa documents.

Insurance.

Driving documents.

Medical information.

Financial paperwork.

Anything relating to children or pets that you may need during the journey or immediately after arrival.

Do not lovingly file everything into a box labelled IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS and then watch that box disappear into a lorry for ten days.

Should I bring my UK car too?

Possibly.

But that's a separate decision from moving your household belongings.

Bringing a British vehicle permanently to Spain can involve registration, taxation, technical and insurance considerations.

Don't simply put the car on a transporter because you're moving everything else.

Work out whether bringing it makes financial and practical sense first.

Your first night in your Spanish home

This is the bit all the paperwork was for.

The boxes are everywhere.

Nobody can find the scissors.

Someone wants to know where the Wi-Fi password is.

You've discovered you own fourteen frying pans but apparently no bed linen.

And you're eating something questionable from the nearest supermarket because nobody has the energy to cook.

But you're there.

Open the doors.

Sit outside.

Look around.

You moved to Spain.

The boxes can wait until tomorrow.

The property comes before the removal truck

One final thought.

Try not to plan your Spanish life entirely around the belongings you already own.

Find the property and location that suit the life you're moving towards, rather than a house capable of accommodating everything from the life you're leaving behind.

Some things deserve to come with you.

Some things don't.

And occasionally the best part of moving country is discovering how little you actually needed.
